It seems that Norweigan Air Shuttle is starting to flex again after having to significantly cut back, with a deal to lease Boeing 737 family aircraft from AerCap.

Norwegian Air Shuttle will lease ten new Boeing 737 MAX 8 and eight Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft – a total of 18 aircraft.
The aircraft are scheduled to deliver in 2022 and 2023, with the Boeing 737-800 aircraft should be delivered in time for the summer 2022 season to provide extra capacity and allow the airline to launch new routes as needed.
With these additions, Norwegian will have a total fleet of 80 aircraft by the summer of 2023.

Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer of AerCap said:
“We are delighted to support Norwegian’s narrowbody fleet renewal program,”
“The addition of these aircraft will help Norwegian grow their operations whilst maintaining its commitment to operate a highly competitive, fuel-efficient fleet of aircraft. We wish Geir Karlsen and all the team every success and we look forward to working with them as these aircraft deliver.”
Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian added:
“The addition of these aircraft will help us achieving our target of building a larger, modern and more fuel-efficient fleet. This will in turn enable us to deliver our products and services in a wide network of routes in the Nordics and to European destinations.”
Growing again
Norwegian has previously announced several lease agreements that will increase its fleet from the current 51 aircraft to this summer’s fleet of 70. For some of the aircraft under these agreements, Norwegian has the option to substitute certain aircraft with equivalent narrow-body models from Airbus.
For the airline that had to contract very hard to survive, growth is finally on the agenda again for Norweigan. With a seemingly solid last quarter, delivering a profit and over 640,000 passengers transported in January, things seemingly are on the up for the airline.
