We all like to be entertained at 35,000ft in the air – and Finnair has selected Panasonic Avionics to upgrade the in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems across the airline’s widebody long-haul fleet.

The IFE upgrade is a part of the Nordic cabin enhancements being introduced by Finnair across its long-haul fleet.
In terms of hardware, Panasonic Avionics is installing its latest eX3 system in all cabins on Finnair’s eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft – upgrading them from its eX2 system. When installed with the Premium Economy cabin, new seatback systems will be installed.

Finnair’s 19 A350-900 aircraft, which already carry eX3, will also see their premium cabins upgraded to the latest version of the system.
Once deployed, the Panasonic ex3 system will be installed in all cabins of Finnair’s long haul fleet. These feature HD screens at each seat, complete with capacitive touch displays and handsets, and USB and laptop charging facilities.

The first aircraft was completed in February 2022.
As well as providing the IFE system, Panasonic Avionics provide the in-flight connectivity system (which is offered under the Nordic Sky brand). The airline also became the launch partner of the Arc map platform too.
For passengers, updated hardware is a wonderful thing to have, with responsive touch screen interfaces. However, this has to be matched with content to drive those screens.
It’ll be interesting to see how these systems are loaded out.
