With Sumner 2022 now leaving behind us, airlines’ attentions turn to Summer 2023 – with United Airlines making their opening gambits for travellers.
Some of the routes have been announced before, however, nothing like a good re-announcement never hurts, with the airline promising connections to 37 transatlantic destinations for the summer season.
The move is based on historic levels of demand for travel to Europe in the summer peak, up 20% compared to 2019 for the airline, and is focused on developing its network to serve continued demand strength.
So what’s new?
- New York/Newark – Malaga, Spain – United is adding a fifth Spanish destination to its global network with new direct flights between New York/Newark and Malaga. This will be a summer seasonal route with three flights a week from 31st May with a Boeing 757-200. United Airlines also services Malaga, Tenerife and Palma de Mallorca which are not served by other airlines
- New York/Newark – Dubai, UAE – This route has been announced already, but it seems United wants to plug this. As part of its historic commercial agreement with Emirates, United will launch direct, daily flights between New York/Newark and Dubai on a Boeing 777-200ER starting 25th March.
- New York/Newark – Stockholm, Sweden – On 27th May United will return to Stockholm for the first time since 2019 with service from New/York Newark with daily flights on a Boeing 757-200.
- Chicago/O’Hare – Shannon, Ireland – Beginning 25th May, United will add more seasonal flights to Shannon, Ireland with new daily flights from Chicago O’Hare with a Boeing 757-200. The airline will also offer direct flights to Dublin from Chicago, New York/Newark and Washington Dulles.
- Chicago/O’Hare – Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona will join the network on 25th May, with new direct, daily flights to Barcelona on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, starting 25th May, boosting the Chicago transatlantic network to 14 destinations.
- San Francisco – Rome, Italy – United will add the city pair from 25th May on a Boeing 777-200ER, boosting transatlantic connectivity to seven European cities for the summer.
- Washington Dulles – Berlin, Germany – A capital-to-capital link will start on the 25th of May with daily flights on a Boeing 767-400ER. United offers more flights to Berlin from the U.S. than any other airline, with existing year-round flights from Newark.
All of the above are subject to governmental and regulatory approval.
London and Paris to get further uplifts.
Of course, the core destinations of London Heathrow and Paris Charles De Gaulle continue to receive uplifts, with Heathrow gaining 23 daily flights to London Heathrow next summer with a second daily flight between Los Angeles and London Heathrow on 25th March on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
United is also adding more options for travel between Washington Dulles and Paris Charles de Gaulle with a second daily flight launching on 2nd June, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
