Crowne Plaza, Geneva
Heading to the hotel, the main entrance was closed, requiring entry via the restaurant.
Oh well. No harm was done there. It could have done with extra signage to find the entrance, however.
Arriving at the check-in desk, I was greeted. My details and passport were taken from me and I went through the process of being welcomed.
I was offered one of three welcome amenities – points, a drink at the bar or breakfast.
Breakfast you say? That sounded like a good idea – and looking at the pricing later, that was not a bad shout – as breakfast was valued at CHF24 at this hotel!
I was upgraded as well to a Deluxe room too – which was nice. With a room allocated on the 7th floor, I headed off to the elevator bank.
This needed a keycard to use – so as usual, ensure your card is working.
Arriving on the 7th floor, I headed to my room.
So what does a deluxe room look like? Not too shabby – once I worked out how to insert the keycard to activate the lighting.
Let’s take a look. First is the main room itself, which has a bed, and a corner sofa.
Which is nice.
Let’s explore the bathroom next. This is important for reasons that will become clear. It’s a massive space… with one unique feature.
No, it’s not the toilet, bath, sink or the Elemis smells. Rather, it’s the sliding door that looks… straight into the bedroom
I am… lossl lost for words for this. I am struggling to find a reason why this exists in any sense of the word.
Let us move onto the sofa. There was a table there, where I used to do a bit of work on the laptop, along with video chatting with a friend who was in the UK (and now has a minor addiction. It was comfortable enough to elegantly slum, whilst making a goddamn mess.
Next to the sofa was a power bar to plug in electronics – a helpful thing.
There was internet provided on the property. Accessing it was a simple matter of hitting the SSID and connecting without further hindrance. However, the connectivity was basic, with around 7 Mb download speed per device. Not stellar, but passable enough.
Moving onto the coffee machine, this time we have a Nespresso Professional machine. These are different to the consumer Nespresso machines as they are disk-shaped coffee pods as opposed to aluminium pods. It also means you can’t take them home if you can’t consume them (unless you have a Nespresso pro machine at home).
There was a minibar underneath too.
Behind were cupboards, with an iron, an ironing board and of course, a robe. It’s almost as if this is a civil place to stay.
And also another country that puts an iron in a hotel room.
As for the bed – it did the job well, with the warm room. It was reasonably comfortable and firm for my tastes, with enough room to roll around in or have a laptop on the side playing bad Youtube videos to fall asleep to.
Choose which one happened.
With morning coming, I was up early for a Sunday. Mainly as I needed to be out of the hotel at a reasonable time (if I wanted a morning walk around Geneva). But also, I wanted breakfast which had been added to my account.
Breakfast was available in the basement, so I made my way downstairs.
With my room number confirmed, I was allowed to find a seat that suited me
The dining area is also the basement restaurant in the hotel. There were five main areas: A drinks station, bread & pastries, cold items, hot items and an omelette station.
Here are some pictures of the items on show.
There was the regular replacement of items when I was idly watching, with the drinks station aggressively managing to ensure patrons were ok or if they needed something extra.
Even the omelette station managed to whip up a Ham and Mushroom omelette for me in a reasonably quick time.
Whilst it was buffet food, it was of good quality – and filled me up for the day ahead (Which is the point of breakfast).
Fully fuelled, I headed upstairs to gather the last of my items and check I had everything.
I headed downstairs to check out, and with no further charges on the account (other than the Geneva tourist fee charge).
With that, I headed out to wait for a Hotel Shuttle back to the airport.
Overall: A very good experience all in all. Whilst the shuttle bus service is a little ropey, the rest of the experience is reasonably high-end enough to justify the cost of the hotel room.
The cost of breakfast is less than accessible (when compared to rack rates), but having IHG Diamond managed to reduce this burden. But it does raise the question of “How much should breakfast be” at a hotel, no matter the quality.
