Heathrow Airport passenger numbers edge upwards

13/02/2023 by Kevincm

Heathrow Airport is reporting its passenger numbers – and its good news as people are choosing to travel, with numbers increasing.

The airport handled over 5.4 million passengers travelling through Heathrow in January, the busiest start of the year since 2020, in a welcome sign that passengers are returning as they flow through the terminals.

According to the numbers released, there is passenger growth in all markets as air travel demand continues to intensify.

Meanwhile, movements continue to increase through the airport as airlines are getting to the point where slot coordination will force a “use it or lose it” situation shortly, as we head into the summer season.

Cargo however is suffering some impact as passenger use intensifies, with cargo traffic decreasing on routes connecting UK Domestic, Europe, Africa and Asia.

With the half seasons kicking off, to support passenger flow through immigration the UK Border Force is trialling the use of eGates for children aged 10 and 11 in Terminal 5 over half term, with a view to long-term implementation. The egates can then be used by more families and visa holders, assisting with smooth journeys.

At least there won’t be long to wait at security – with the airport reporting 98% of passengers waited less than 10 minutes for security in January.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said:

“Heathrow is back to its best, with passenger satisfaction scores meeting or exceeding 2019 levels. We are giving a warm welcome to families over the half term getaway by delivering excellent service and bringing back the magic of travel.”

Allow extra travel time, especially with families

With the first round of half-term holidays taking place, the airport is going to be a bit busier than normal. Suffice to say, you should allow extra time to travel – especially if it is your first time in an airport in a few years.

Whilst the airport is reporting security times of less than 10 minutes, it will spike at peak times.

Just ensure you have time to complete the formalities you need…

And remember your passport.
