It seems that Qatar Airways has got its hands on some new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, and has placed them into service.
The airline will be adding nine of the Boeing 737-8 variant to its fleet, on a lease. These aircraft were originally destined for S7 Airlines – who cannot take delivery of them.
Qatar Airways has now received its second Boeing 737-8 and will receive the remaining 7 aircraft by the end of July.
The first of the nine arrived at Doha on 15 April. Since its arrival the aircraft has undergone post-delivery maintenance which has included IFE streaming installation and the aircraft has been used for pilot training.
Qatar Airways has an existing order for Boeing 737-10 aircraft, with 25 firm orders currently.
In terms of differences, there will be some differences between the 737-8 and 737-10. From a passenger perspective, the 737-8 will feature wireless IFE (branded Oryx One Play Wireless), whilst the 737-10s will have a seatback IFE screen.
In Operation
According to the airline, the use of the Boeing 737-8s will add capacity in short-haul markets, which allow routes to be expanded. This includes the Doha-Kuwait-Doha route, as well as to other nations in the Gulf Cooperation Council, as further approvals take place.
