SNAPSHOT: IBIS Budget, St Pauli, Hamburg

It’s time for another Snapshot, this time focusing on the hotel experience at the Ibis Budget, St Pauli in Hamburg, Germany.

Today, we’re on the Snapshot. The full in-depth review is coming. But it’s taking a lot longer than usual to put fingers on the keyboard…

Location/Access

The Ibis Budget is located a short walk away from the U3 U Bahn station at St Pauli.

It’s across the road from the Dom entertainment park (when it is in town) and parallels the Reeperbahn for those who want a more… wild night out.

It is co-located next to a full-service Ibis next door – to the point the Ibis budget called it Ibis Red, with full access. We covered this last year when the cost differential was a lot slimmer.

Check-in

The check-in process was handled quickly and efficiently.

There was an identity check, along with the usual paperwork that had to be completed manually. No further payment was taken, as the room was pre-paid.

Interestingly, the Ibis is trying some more eco credentials, having “wooden” keys, with RIFD chips embedded inside.

Different.

The room

This is the classic Ibis budget room. This variant has a double bed, a bunk bed rated for 100kg. Interestingly, the biggest upgrade since I was in this Ibis , was the television, which had a 42″ screen where a 20″ used to reside.

This had a selection of cable, local and international channels

There’s also a toilet and a shower in the room.

All the amenities had switched to pump-to-use style

Plugs were located near the TV and besides the bed.

Internet connectivity was provided free of charge to the room, with 100 MB download speeds noted.

Breakfast

Whilst a breakfast option was offered both at booking and at sold at reception this was not booked.

This was offered at £9/€10 per day.

Well, it’s hard to take advantage of this when you wake up 20 minutes before an early meeting and have to dash over to the Messenhallen with the bits of a continental breakfast inside you.

Additional services

The hotel had a vending machine available, with other drinks available for purchase. For those who need food, it’s a trip out to the Rehperbahn, or ordering in if needed.

Checkout

Checkout was a matter of dropping a key card in a bowl and thanking the receptionist. With that, I was on my way with no further charges added to the room.
