Last Week at Economy Class and Beyond (22nd/23rd July)

22/07/2023 by Kevincm

We’re going through July faster than some of us like. In addition, we’re heading into peak holiday season in the UK. So obviously, it’s raining.

Tradition states it must.

But things go on, so it’s time for Last Week at Economy Class and Beyond.

Trip Report – Back to Innovation, Back to Hamburg.

I’m… running behind on this, to put it mildly. More next week.

  • BA974 London Heathrow to Hamburg Airport (CLUB EUROPE)
  • Into Germany, IBIS Budget Saint Pauli

Loyalty

  • British Airways to move to revenue-based Avios Earning – I did warn you when Iberia pulled this trick. Expect devaluations, especially on the Elite levels.

Passenger Experience

  • British Airways opens its Whispering Angels bar at Terminal 5B – Rosé out of Terminal 5B
  • Emirates to introduce pre-departure meal ordering – Good to see Emirates following the pack
  • Korean Air resumes its network in Japan and China – Well, you’ve got to rebuild somehow
  • To Find, To Serve – British Airways trials a new digital wayfinding tool (and we play with it too) – The maps are good. The times… are optimistic.

Routes and Networks

  • easyJet extends its coverage out of the UK for winter – More snow and sun.
  • Japan Airlines to launch a Tokyo Handea – Doha service – Feeding the Qatar Airways Doha hub.

Sustainability in the Air

  • Virgin Atlantic and partners edge closer to a 100% SAF-fueled transatlantic flight – Nice demonstration, but SAF supply is getting to the point where action is needed.

New Aircraft News

  • Malaysia Airlines gears up for Boeing 737 MAX entry into service – Coming in August.

Pretty Pictures

  • United Airlines Boeing 787-9 on final approach to Chicago O’Hare

Next Week

As we head into the school holiday season in the United Kingdom, we’re coming to expect the usual silly season that lasts until the end of August. We’ll be going through our backlog (and trust me, it’s gone mad since Aircraft Interiors Expo and beyond that).

On top of that, we’ll see what news there is out there as we head into the summer break. That and I need to do some numbers of BA’s new Avios plans which are as clear as cheap cloudy lemonade.

Until then, Happy Landings!
