Whilst some people are very organised, and have their recycled fillable water bottle with them at all times, others (like your writer), have the organisational skills of a pea some days.
So when I need a bottle of water at an airport, it’s a grumble, more than happiness when given the choice of paying through the nose at newsagents.
Thankfully, Dublin Airport has updated how it offers bottled water.
You can pay with hard cash – but if you’re unorganised like me, you can pay with a contactless payment method.
The machine accepts €1 in coinage or a tap-and-pay function. I used Apple Pay via my Monzo account.
And it worked simply and quickly, with the notification coming up.
There are also hydration stations dotted around the airport, to fill your bottle – both before and after security (both bottle fillers and water fountains.
Rescuing friction when buying a bottle of water
Dublin Airport has always had bottles of water on sale, with the trust system being key – i.e., you pop a €1 in a slot and take your water bottle. However, there are a lot of people who have gone cashless, who don’t want to break into a note or haven’t got the hard cash to hand, but have a payment card or other contactless method (eg Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, etc).
Reducing the friction to purchase something as simple as a bottle of water – by offering more methods to pay – is a quick win in the passenger experience realm.
One that passengers of any class can take advantage of.
