The airline will add four Boeing 787 aircraft to its fleet – the exact variants have not been disclosed.
TAAG Angola Airlines currently flies five 777-300ER (Extended Range) jets, three 777-200ERs and seven 737-700s to 12 destinations across Africa, Europe, South America and China. Four Boeing 777-300ERs are currently in service.
In other operations, TAAG has De Halivland Dash8-Q400 aircraft, a singular Airbus A330-200 (Operated by Hi Fly Matla) and has an order for the Airbus A220-300 (to replace the 737 fleet in due course).

Eduardo Fairen, CEO of TAAG Angola Airlines said:
“Our goal is to work with the best manufacturers in the world towards a multi-type fleet, in order to ensure we have the appropriate airplanes for each flight typology, namely our intercontinental connections,”
“The 787 option suits our intent for modern, size-wise and efficient equipment, able to progressively replace our current widebody fleet, and provide our customers with an improved flight experience.”
Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa added:
“The 787 Dreamliner will enable TAAG Angola Airlines to open new routes and expand their international network,”
“The Dreamliner’s market-leading efficiency and passenger comfort will advance the carrier’s fleet modernization plans.”
Options for the airline, market for Boeing
Given this operation, the airline might be looking towards the Boeing 787-9 for range and the Boeing 787-10 for payload to replicate some of the 777s features. With four of its fleet in an active state, this very much seems like a like-for-like upgrade as it chooses to modernise its fleet and improve the passenger experience.
For Boeing, Africa remains an important market, with it predicting the that the continent will need 1,025 airplanes over the next two decades, with growth continuing in the region – and airlines are going to need to compete for aircraft to support the region.
Lots of room for sales.
