Singapore Airlines Elevates and Refreshes its Premium Economy product

15/03/2024 by Kevincm

Singapore Airlines has unveiled its revamped Premium Economy Class in-flight experience, which includes an improved and expanded selection of food and beverage options, as well as a new amenity kit.

Let’s be honest – if there are bubbles, it’s always a good start to a Premium Economy Flight.
Passengers will be offered a glass of Charles de Cazanove Brut Tradition NV champagne shortly after take-off. From there, there’s going to be a printed menu card where they can select a variety of meal, snack, and beverage options that are available on their flight.

Their selected meals will be served in custom-made porcelain Premium Economy Class serviceware. Let’s dive into the food.

The airline has developed over 200 new appetizers, main courses, and desserts as part of this expansion of the Premium Economy Class in-flight meals. Premium Economy Class meals will consist of a seasonal appetizer, main course, bread, dessert, and cheese and crackers, all served on a full-sized tray.

Upgraded bread options will also include croissants for breakfast or garlic bread rolls for lunch, dinner, and supper.

New appetizers include garlic roasted prawns with smoked aioli and Patatas Bravas (Spanish fried potatoes), broccoli salad with hot smoked salmon, and seasonal variations of Japanese cold noodles with soba sauce.

Customers may choose from two premium main course options, either international or Asian cuisine, on every flight. Highlights include new dishes such as Beef Bourguignon served with bacon, mushrooms, vegetables, and potato gratin, Bak Chor Mee (minced pork noodles), and Thai-style Crab Curry served with a combination of jasmine rice and brown rice, and seasonal vegetables with egg.

Customers may also choose from an expanded Book the Cook menu, which features up to 20 dishes available on rotation, for pre-order at least 24 hours before departure. This includes popular choices such as Singapore Style Seafood Hor Fun and Chicken Biryani, as well as new additions like Slow Braised Lamb Ragout, Sake Teriyaki (salmon in teriyaki sauce), and plant-based wellness dishes such as Mushroom Eggplant Meatballs.

Desserts include Chocolate Feuilletine Cake, Mascarpone Cream Cake, as well as Apple Crumble Cheesecake. Meals are accompanied by a small bar of chocolate, as well as upgraded cheese and crackers.

Between meals, customers can request new snack options such as almonds and cashews. These are on top of the existing wide variety of snacks such as potato chips, assorted buns, sandwiches, muffins, as well as flavoured popcorn.

Amenity kit time

On flights that are at least seven hours long, an all-new Out of the Woods amenity kit, designed exclusively for Premium Economy Class customers, will also be available. The amenity pouch is made from eco-friendly Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified kraft paper fabric, and includes eyeshades and slippers made from recycled PET material. The kit also incorporates a lip balm packaged in biodegradable material.

Toiletries, such as dental kits and moisturizers, will continue to be available in the lavatory.

The move marks the first comprehensive revamp of Singapore Airlines Premium Economy Class in-flight experience since this cabin class was introduced in 2015.

The new service will kick off on the 31st March on International flights.

Mr. Yeoh Phee Teik, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience at Singapore Airlines, said:

“Since its introduction in 2015, Premium Economy Class has become popular with our customers. They appreciate the added amenities, heightened comfort, and the extra personal space it offers, all at an excellent value.

“At Singapore Airlines, though, our philosophy is to never stand still. We regularly gather customer feedback and conduct market research, learn more about the evolving value drivers for travelers, and find innovative ways to continue delivering a personalize and world-class in-flight experience.

“Based on these insights, we have undertaken this comprehensive revamp of our Premium Economy Class in-flight offerings, which we believe will delight our customers. The result reflects Singapore Airlines’ dedication to enhancing the Premium Economy Class experience to a class of its own.”

Delivering a lot more than economy class can

The Premium Economy Class proposition has been an interesting thing to watch airlines adopt – as in the past, some saw it as cannibalising business traffic, whilst others saw people upgrading from economy class.

That’s changed since 2020, with premium leisure travel up ticking a lot more than business travel. As such having a competitive space for passengers has become more important, with airlines upgrading their premium economy class experiences in the air.

And that’s welcome to see.

Singapore Airlines is combining this with some of the features that make it “that” airline with “Book the Cook” as well as some of its own other Singaporean touches

Depending on the price, it might be a very compelling option for those who want a little bit more than the normal economy-class experience.
