It’s a Sunday again (at the time of publication), so it must be time for some more Airplane Art.
If you’re a regular reader of Economy Class and Beyond, you’ll know that we have a weekly feature called “Airplane Art” where I debut some of my photography of aircraft.
I tend to rotate photos in this section a lot through the blog, but it’s time for a “Special” from one of my favourite spotting locations – at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare.
Why here?
It’s right on the Approach/Departure paths for Chicago O’Hare. This screenshot should say it all:
This, of course, is dependent on the room, which will depend on your view. For all of this trip, I seemed to have take-off views, rather than landing views.
Let the winds guide you, as well as the room.
As usual, I’m using my default shooting equipment – a Canon EOS R, with an RF to EF adaptor – with a classic EF 100-400mm f5.6-f6.3 L Series Zoom lens. The kit is a little older, with the lens having seen better days (and I’m still eyeing the new RF lenses from afar).
On this occasion, I was facing the Expressway and Rosemont station – which for aircraft departing O’Hare gives a great angle. Let’s have a look at what I caught.

The accent angle meant that i was getting the belly of the beast, more often than not.

Overall
For lazy airplane-watching, this is perfect. You’ve got the range of good take-off and landing paths, as well as the comfort to go inside and get warm quickly, grab a drink or relax, whilst you can let your electronics charge between sessions (or when the winds demand another runway to be used)
It’s important to work out the main departure and arrivals banks – as there is some noise ablation in the area. For that, invest in a FlightRadar24 subscription – it can be the best money spent.
