SNAPSHOT: The Ibis Budget St Pauli, Hamburg

14/06/2024 by Kevincm

It’s time for another Snapshot, focusing on the hotel experience at the Ibis Budget, St Pauli in Hamburg, Germany.

In case you’ve forgotten how we do travel write-ups on Economy Class and Beyond, I have two major travel writing styles:

  • Trip Reports – These are full deep-dive reports taking you into the experience, the small things… as well as the big things!
  • Snapshots – These are bite-sized reviews that show you the basic product in some nice gentle headlines (and normally, only images shot on the phone)

Today, we’re on the Snapshot. The full in-depth review is coming. But it’s taking a lot longer than usual to put fingers on the keyboard…

Booking

The hotel was booked via Accor’s site. A lead-in rate was offered of £405. I chose a flexible cancellation version for £24 more, as there were issues in my day-to-day life.

Location/Access

The Ibis Budget St Pauli is located a short walk away from the U3 U-Bahn station at in the area. For those who are arriving via the Reeperbahn, it’s one street row behind for a quieter evening out.

It’s close to Dom Entertainment Park (when it is in town).

The hotel is co-located next to a fuller-service Ibis next door – to the point the Ibis budget called it Ibis Red, with access available across the properties (although the lift keycards are coded to the properties)

Check-in

The check-in process was handled quickly and efficiently, with an identity check and payment taken, as a pay-on-arrival rate was selected. With this a keycard was issued.

The Room

This room is a little different to the classic Ibis Budget room. Regular readers will spot the difference straight away.

Correct – this room has no bunk bed – it’s just a normal double bed.  The room features a keycard entry, as well as a large-format TV that they upgraded in the past couple of years  This had a selection of cable, local and international channels

There’s also a toilet and a shower in the room, in closed-off areas.

All the amenities had switched to pump-to-use style

Plugs were located near the TV and beside the bed.

Internet connectivity was provided free of charge to the room, with 100 MB download speeds noted.

Breakfast

While a breakfast option was offered at both the booking and when checking in, this option was not taken up.

This was offered at £11/€12 per day.

Additional services

The hotel had a vending machine available, with other drinks available for purchase. For those who need food, it’s a trip out to the Rehperbahn, the Hauptbahnhof, or ordering in if needed.

Checkout

The check-out process was as simple as dropping the keycard at reception and advising them of the room number I was in.

With that, I was on my way with no further charges added to the room.

The full review of the Ibis Budget St Pauli in Hamburg is coming soon!

Next year, do I what I did and buy 8,000 Hyatt points in a sale and book the Lindner near the Messe! Possibly my best Hyatt redemption ever on pence per point.

It’s in the planning list. Sadly, I had no sight this year *if* I was going to Hamburg and how long.

I’ll keep that in mind. Hotel options during AIX week get tight. Fast

Especially when one night in the ibis budget I was in…. Was €139…

Oh. I cringed when I read that you paid over 400 Euros since I thought that was for a night. That seemed quite pricey.
