It seems Air Canada has snapped up some extra capacity, with the airline signing for an additional eight Boeing 737-8 aircraft.
The Canadian carrier has signed an agreement with h BOC Aviation Limited (“BOC Aviation”) for the placement of eight Boeing 737-8 aircraft.
The eight aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2024 and will undergo required modifications before entering service in 2025.
The aircraft will initially operate with a single Economy class layout until they are reconfigured to fully match the standard onboard experience in Air Canada’s narrow-body, two-cabin standard at a later date.
All eight aircraft will be powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines.

Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada said:
“We look forward to these aircraft entering into service next year, upon the completion of some required modifications. These eight, brand-new, fuel- and cost-efficient 737-8s will provide more fleet flexibility and additional capacity while supporting one of our sustainability goals of mitigating emissions,”
Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation added:
“We are pleased that Canada’s flag carrier, Air Canada, is working with us once again as it strengthens its network,”
“Continued growth in passenger travel is stimulating demand for aircraft, which we have been able to address for Air Canada in this transaction with eight aircraft delivering from our 100 per cent latest technology orderbook.”
Expanding capacity
Air Canada is seemingly adding extra capacity to its fleet. Currently, the airline has 40 of the type in service, with the airline adding further examples to boost capacity. These are supported by Airbs A319, A320 and A321 (with the A321 fleet all being reconfigured to hold 196 passengers).
It’s interesting they’re going to be put into service “as is”, in a single class layout, then be refitted along the line – thus allowing them to earn revenue at peak travel time.
It will be a sub-fleet to watch, especially if you’re a premium traveller.

I’d guess at least some of them will be rushed into service to catch part of the Florida winter season at the beginning of 2025, in part to counter service additions to Florida just announced by Porter.
These may also be to hedge against the 5 they already had on order for 2025 delivery being late due to Boeing’s ongoing production woes.
