With Alaska Airlines planning to retrofit its fleet, they have turned to Recro Aircraft Seating to supply seats to go into the aircraft.
Alaska Airlines will retrofit their Boeing 737-800 and MAX 8 aircraft with the R2 economy class seat and R5 business class seat.
This will include 79 aircraft in the Alaska fleet for a total of 12,719 passenger seats, with deliveries scheduled to begin in Q4 2024.
Alaska Airlines launched the R5 seat (previously the CL4710) in 2017. It features a six-way adjustable headrest and calf rest. It will also feature a “Bring your own device” holder integrated into the seat back and USB-C connectivity.
Meanwhile, the Recaro R2 (previously the BL3710) is a lighter, more modern version of the seat currently in flight and will be equipped with a comfort plus cushion. The R2 with its lightweight design will allow for a more efficient cabin layout without compromising passenger space.
In addition, Alaska will transition one row of their Economy Class to Premium Class with the assistance of the RECARO Customer Service Team and the modification packages offered.

Building on a 12-year-old relationship
For Recaro, it’s another welcome win as it continues to deliver reliably for its partner Alaska Airlines, as it goes for a big retrofit for its fleet introducing further R5 seating, up-to-date R2 seating, and even premium seating onboard their fleet of Boeing 737-800 and MAX-8 aircraft.
With the airline angling after premium travellers in its refit plans, more R5 seats, along with extra space R2 seats will play a key part in the delivery of the product.
After all, demand is everything
With over 12,000 seats to manufacture, it’s going to keep Recaro Aircraft Seating busy too.
