Recently Scandanvan Airliens (SAS) signed an agreement with Braathens Regional Airways AB (BRA) to provide long-term lift and capacity. As such, SAS is announcing that it to strengthen its Swedish domestic operations from Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
This will include new destinations and increased frequencies on several key routes in Sweden. Starting in January 2025, SAS will launch new routes to Halmstad, Kalmar, and Sälen, boosting connectivity across Sweden.
This is in the face of a challenging Swedish Domestic Market, seemingly a wet-lease service marketed and sold by SAS can help alleviate.
Under the terms of a wet lease agreement, BRA will operate several aircraft on behalf of SAS, providing capacity on key domestic routes in Sweden and allowing SAS to provide reliable and efficient domestic travel.
According to the airline, this expansion and increased capacity offer passengers greater travel flexibility within the country and more convenient connections to international destinations from Arlanda. SAS will continue to play a crucial role in linking regional hubs with the capital and beyond, driving economic growth and regional development, supporting both business and leisure travellers, and solidifying Arlanda’s position as a strong hub for domestic and international travel.
SAS has published the following routes they plan to start up, with winter schedules live, and summer schedules to be confirmed:
- Arlanda- Halmstad
- Arlanda – Kalmar
- Arlanda – Sälen
- Ängelholm – Sälen
Starting from January 2025, the following routes to and from Arlanda will see an increase in weekly frequencies.
Route | March 2024 | Planned March 20205 | Service Increase |
Visiby (VBY) | 9 | 44 | 389% |
Malmö (MMX) | 29 | 41 | 41% |
Ängelholm-Helsinborg (AGH) | 21 | 29 | 38% |
Ronnerby (RNB) | 17 | 21 | 24% |

“Building from Arlanda Airport, this partnership strengthens Swedish infrastructure, connecting local communities to the world and fostering greater global accessibility and opportunities”,
“We’re thrilled to open new routes to Halmstad, Kalmar, and Sälen and look forward to continue closely collaborating with local airports and regional partners to ensure the success of these routes.”
Bridging gaps left by Bomma
With BRA planning to leave Stockholm Bromma Airport, there will be losses – two routes having no coverage at Arlanda (namely Kristianstad and Växjö) will lose service to the Swedish capital.
And Bromma will be used to just having Finnair and NyxAir as tenants.
All the other routes are replicated – if for a short period of downtime in January before the new services commence.
Whilst travelling to Arlanda will allow these regional passengers to gain easier onward connections (with SAS’s fleet having a long-haul base there), it will be the cost of convenience – with Bromma only 5km away from the city centre, whilst Arlanda is a good 37km from the centre – requiring an 18-33 minute train transfer to the city.
It’s going to be a change for those passengers who are used to short transits into the city – that’s for sure.
