Codeshares continue to make the world go around, with Finnair and American Airlines partnering up to deliver connectivity to Mexico.
The two airlines are to start codeshare cooperation in January to 12 Mexican destinations. The cooperation includes American Airlines’ flights from its Dallas-Fort Worth hub to Guanajuato, Monterrey, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Cancún, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Mérida, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Querétaro and San José del Cabo airports.
We all know that Dallas-Fort Worth is the fortress hub for American Airlines and its home – and for Finnair, the destination is important too, as it feeds passengers back and forth through there. To support its Helsinki – Dallas-Fort Worth flights, Finnair is serving up to a daily service during winter, scaling to 11 flights a week in summer.
Codeshare flights are flights operated by Finnair’s partners, for which Finnair offers seats and sells them under Finnair’s flight number. With the codeshare cooperation, Finnair customers can travel their entire route with a Finnair flight number and collect Avios and Tier Points for the entire trip.
These codeshare destinations further expand the existing joint route network with the Atlantic Joint Business partner American Airlines.
The codeshare flights are avalible for sale as of today (13th January) for flights from 23rd January onwards. Flights on the codeshared routes are operated by American Airlines and its subsidiary Envoy Air.

Finnair’s SVP of Alliances and Airline Partnerships, Fredrik Wildtgrube said:
“The cooperation opens up a comprehensive choice of destinations for our customers to Mexico, which is a popular travel destination from Finland and elsewhere in Northern Europe, especially during the winter. Besides Mexico, American Airlines offers our customers excellent connections via Dallas also to elsewhere in the United States and America,”
Anmol Bhargava, American Airlines’ Vice President of Partnerships adds:
“We are happy to offer Finnair customers smoother access to popular destinations in Mexico. The expansion will give customers more convenient connections on American’s expansive network from Mexico to Finland and beyond,”
Further Connectivity options are never a bad thing
For Finnair passengers, having connectivity options to a country that is currently not served by the airline could expand their travel options, whilst keeping everything under one ticket. For some passengers – that could be very useful in terms of “just travelling”.
For American Airlines, it is simply a matter of feeding passengers and luggage through, whilst adding an extra code to their flights and keeping more of that precious Joint Transatlatic Business Agreement money inside that pot.
With route development an important thing – least of all, Finnair is still suffering in some ways due to the lack of overflight rights over certain countries – the airline will be looking carefully at the data and bookings generated.
And who knows – formulate their own plans for Mexico in the future.
