United Airlines is trying out four new long haul destinations, expanding the airlines’s international reach – and this time, over the Pacific.

The Chicago-based carrier will offer flights from Hong Kong to Bangkok, Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with new daily services planned to start this autumn, as fifth-freedom flights. Both of these flights will be operated with a Boeing 787-9.
These new flights will be scheduled to offer easier connections for travellers from across North America to help meet the growing demand for travel to these destinations.
Starting 11th December, United will launch the first nonstop flights between the U.S. and Adelaide, Australia – just in time for the Australian summer. This service will be a seasonal one, from San Francisco, operating Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays outbound, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays inbound. This flight will be operated with a Boeing 787-9.
The airline also serves Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne in Australia.
In addition, United is also adding a second daily flight between San Francisco and Manila, commencing 25th October. Passengers will have the option of a daytime or evening flight for greater convenience. The flight will be operated on a Boeing 777-300ER.
With these new routes, United Airlines will now offer flights from the U.S. to 32 different cities in the Pacific region.

Some interesting network choices
United Airlines is continuing to push its network in new directions – to the point of using tag-on flights to expand its reach from Hong Kong, as well as trying a new city in Australia and adding extra capacity to its Philipine network.
Some demand modelling has happened to ensure that these network launches are viable – even if one of the routes is seasonal, along with forward booking across the network.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the airline fills these seats.
