What’s the term that I can use here? The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I had a few places on my list that I wanted to visit on this trip to Chicago (with My Pi Pizza high on the list – even if it is much more of a hole-in-the-wall place compared to some of the sit-down joints that I normally go to).

However, I had been burning the candle at both ends when hanging around with friends as well as not exactly getting over the time changes, and thus, when my friends went home, I did a little plane spotting… and then promptly collapsed in bed.

What was “I’ll head into Central Chicago at Five PM” turned into “Oh hell, it’s Nine PM and I’m been out cold for 4 hours plus”.

Exhaustion gets the best of us sometimes.

Racking through my brain, I could have hung around the Hyatt and tried to get Giordano’s to deliver. That’s normally a working option. However, I wanted to be out in the world, too. Thankfully, Pequods is open till midnight on a Sunday.

Whilst I might have been peopled out a bit, eating a deep dish in a hotel room can be downright boring, especially with some of the US Television at the moment.

With plenty of time on the clock, I scrambled a Lyft over to Pequods. I would have combined this with going downtown if I had been much more awake earlier.

At least this driver wasn’t too talkative. As much as I love to listen to a life story in the back of a cab, there are some days when I just want to look at the road ahead or sit in silence, with Pokémon Go in the background.

I ask for so little. And sometimes, I get it.

Arriving at Pequods, I was dropped off by Lyft and headed into the welcoming Pizza and Sports Bar.

Midnight on Sunday… that’s a good thing.

I was welcomed, and the number of seats required was confirmed. When it was just for this one person, I was seated at the bar.

I was given a menu (with the QR codes seemingly vanished) and left for a few minutes to consider my options.

Food…

And drink.

I went for a comparatively simple deep-dish pizza – Peperoni, Sausage and Giardiniera. And yes, a small portion of fries, as I was thinking this would be the full 45-minute-plus wait for the pizza. I was in more of a nibbly mood after a long weekend.

I got chatting to bar staff, who are used to seeing travellers come for their pizza. The path that led me here was from Food Insider some years ago.

Drinks arrived, with Pepsi to keep me hydrated.

The fries came out (and yes, I went for a half portion. I might be a pig, but I can control what I eat).

I nibbled on these as I checked in on the world, some message boards and social networks, trying to keep in two parts of the universe – the virtual and the real world.

The fries were quite crispy, with them coming pre-seasoned with salt and pepper by the chef and the kitchen staff.

I must have been taking my time, or the pizza was quick, as the Deep Dish Pizza appeared in front of me after 30 minutes. If I had known that, I would have skipped the fires. Such is life.

The Question, of course, is, does the deep dish pizza look glorious?

Of course.

Yep. Thats a cheese pull

Pequods line their edges with mozzarella cheese that is burned as it cooks in the heavy metal skillet pan, so it is still “cooking” as it arrives at your table.

More importantly, it keeps the pizza hot.

As pizza is an infinitely customisable dish, it’s very much to your taste – I’ve gone for a mixture that is plenty meaty, cheesy and has spice to cut through fat.

It’s easier than adding chilli to each bite to help.

That and you can get amazing cheese pulls.

And yes, Deep Dish pizza is not a pickup food – it is very much a knife-and-fork experience. And I’m fine with that, even if I was mentally in a 1000 other places.

If anything forces me to slow down (especially in the coming weeks), it’s welcome.

With my belly full and two slices of pizza gone, I asked politely for the rest to be boxed for transit back across the pond.

And with the bill-yes, it’s pricey – but honestly, I don’t mind when it comes to good food, especially something that I’m going to be snacking on for the rest of the week.

With that settled, it was time to wait for another Uber back to the Hyatt. I could have Ubered to an L Station, then trained and walked… but it was getting more than a little windy.

Gotta love this city.

A Monday Morning Wandering into Chicago. And maybe a trip to Daiso.

Nice review Kevin – and great pics of the pizza. Based on your pics I will visit Pequod’s one day.
