It’s Sunday again, so it must be time for some more Airplane Art.
This week, we have a Delta Air Lines Boeing 717-200 on final approach to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Delta operates a fleet of 74 active Boeing 717s in its fleet (with three parked). They form part of Delta’s single-aisle fleet, operating alongside Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Airbus A321, Airbus A321neo, Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-900ER.
The Boeing 717’s history stems from the McDonnell Douglas DC-9, MD-80, and MD-90, with aircraft initially marketed as the MD-95 as a 100-passenger aircraft. Upon the Boeing-McDonnell-Douglas merger, the aircraft was redesignated the Boeing 717, with 156 aircraft rolling off the production line when production was ceased.
This aircraft – N895AT – was initially delivered to airTran in January 2005. Southwest Airlines took over AirTran in 2010, with the fleet transferred to Delta Air Lines. This example was transferred in February 2014. This aircraft remains in the Delta fleet, with its parked between January 2021 to March 2023.
At the time of writing, this aircraft is based out of Delta’s home of Atlanta, operating to Houston, Tallahassee, Huntsville, Gulfport, Memphis, Panama City, Chattanooga, Birmingham (Alabama), Asheville, Destin Fort Walton Beach, Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Greenville-Spartanburg, Greensboro, Oklahoma City, Dallas-Love Field and Lexington.
