The joy of another strike on the London Underground

08/09/2025 by Kevincm Leave a Comment

The RMT Union has called out its members who work for London Underground out on strike. As such, the London Underground network is severely impacted.

In addition, Docklands Light Railway staff will also go on strike.

Strikes are planned on the Tube and DLR between 7th and 12th September. Planned disruptions include.

  • From Monday, 8 to Thursday, 11 September 2025, Tube services will be severely disrupted, with little to no service expected
  • On Tuesday, 9 and Thursday, 11 September 2025, there will also be no service on the DLR

Transport for London has produced an infographic to help you understand the impact at https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/strikes.

If you need to travel, other TfL services, including the Elizabeth line, London Overground and trams, will be running normally but are likely to be extremely busy. At times, they may not be able to stop at stations shared with the London Underground

The impacts include

Monday 8 to Thursday 11 September

London Underground

  • Disruption expected across the Underground network. TfL are expecting little to no service running.  If services run, there will be no service before 08:00, with any services needing to be completed by 18:00

DLR

  • On Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th September only: there will be no DLR service due to strike action. On all other days, a full service will operate. Note, stations shared with Underground services may suffer possible disruption

Elizabeth line

  • There are no strikes on the Elizabeth line. However, stations shared with Tube services may suffer possible disruption. In addition, trains will not stop at stations between Whitechapel and Bond Street at these times:
    • Monday 8 and Wednesday 10 September, before 07:30 and after 22:30
    • Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 September before 08:00

Any airport travel impacted?

For those heading to London Heathrow, you will need to use the Elizabeth Line as opposed to the Piccadilly Line, given the minimal to no service expected.

In addition, if you are travelling to London from any of the other airports (including London City, Luton, Gatwick and Southend) or arriving by train or coach, you will need to negotiate the buses, bikes, taxis or rideshares to get around the capital.

Whilst some parts are walking distance, ensure you’ve got comfortable shoes.

You’re going to need them more than usual.

Why has the RMT called its members to go on strike?

Accordin to the Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT), they say:

The strikes come after management refused to engage seriously with union demands on pay, fatigue management, extreme shift patterns and a reduction in the working week, as well as failing to honour previous agreements made with staff.

In Quotes

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said:

“Our members are doing a fantastic job to keep our capital moving and work strenuous shift patterns to make sure Londoners get to their destinations around the clock.
“They are not after a King’s ransom, but fatigue and extreme shift rotations are serious issues impacting on our members health and wellbeing- all of which have not been adequately addressed for years by LU management.

“Coupled with the fact there are outstanding issues around staff travel arrangements, an atmosphere of distrust has been created, where our members feel like no one is listening to them.

“RMT will continue to engage LU management with a view to seeking a revised offer in order to reach a negotiated settlement.”

Claire Mann, TfL’s Chief Operating Officer, said:

“We call on the RMT to suspend this action, put our fair and affordable offer to their members and continue discussions with us. Our pay deal is in line with other offers accepted by the RMT across the rail industry, so it is disappointing the RMT is planning to disrupt Londoners without giving their members a say on the offer.

“We remain open for discussions about any part of our offer, and we are committed to making sure our colleagues are treated fairly. We welcome further engagement from all of our unions about managing fatigue across the network, but a reduction in the contractual 35-hour working week is neither practical nor affordable.

Plan Ahead

If you’re planning to go to London this week and want to walk everywhere – or work out how London’s buses work, you’re in for a treat. Those who rely on the London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway will have a much worse time and will need to plan ahead.

And don’t expect things to get back to normal quickly on Friday.
