Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo, said:
“Entering Heathrow, a key global hub known for its scale and connectivity, is both a proud milestone and a strategic step forward in strengthening IndiGo’s global footprint. The India-United Kingdom corridor has long held significant relevance, not only because of strong bilateral ties, but also due to the growing traffic between the two countries driven by students, visiting friends and relatives, business and leisure travellers. After the outstanding response to our long-haul debut flights to Manchester, we are excited to set foot in London, offering more travel options for our customers while reinforcing our commitment to provide seamless connectivity between India and the world.”
Ross Baker, Heathrow’s Chief Customer Officer, said:
“We are pleased to welcome IndiGo’s new daily service between Mumbai and Heathrow. As the UK’s international gateway, this new route will further strengthen the vital ties between the UK and India, creating opportunities for trade, tourism and cultural exchange. We look forward to supporting IndiGo’s international growth while offering passengers more choice when travelling between these two world-class cities.”
Expanding options to the UK and beyond
Heathrow marks the second destination for IndiGo, which also serves Manchester Airport in Northern England. The airline also serves Amsterdam and Copenhagen as it continues its widebody expansion using Norse Atlantic’s 787 fleet.
For IndiGo, it’s a statement that they are making – they are going to Heathrow. That brings lots of options for the airline’s passengers, given Heathrow’s offering of global connectivity, making it a critical link for Indian travellers, both business and leisure. The airport’s central geographic location serves as a natural gateway to the UK, Europe, and transatlantic routes, and IndiGo’s entry into Heathrow is poised to offer smoother, more direct travel options for customers flying between India and western markets.
The new service will also provide travellers from the west with access to over 90 destinations across IndiGo’s domestic network and many international destinations in Asia, as well as targeting Origin and Destination traffic, citing the two cities’ fiscal prowess and trade ties.
For passengers, more options beyond the traditional carriers that ply service between Mumbai and London will be welcomed.
