Jet2.com has been busy with a fleet retrofit programme to improve the efficiency of its Boeing 737 fleet. It’s worth a dive-in, as those savings add up, especially when trying to offer money off a Jet2Holiday.

The airline has retrofitted 74 Boeing 737-800NG aircraft with the old winglets removed and Split Scimitar Winglets installed.
The retrofit improves aircraft efficiency, reducing fuel burn by 1.5% and helping to cut the airline’s annual carbon emissions by over 28,000 tonnes, utilising designs supplied by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB).
Jet2.com is hoping for savings, as this will reduce annual fuel consumption by more than 11 million litres.
Whilst this speaks to the sustainability agenda (which is on every airline’s lips), it will also reduce the cost of fuel uplifted each time an aircraft tanks up for its next mission.
And those 1.5% savings add up over time, especially over the life of an aircraft multiplied by the size of its fleet.

David Neill, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at Jet2, said:
“This multi-million pound investment in our fleet is the latest demonstration of our firm commitment to taking tangible actions that reduce our environmental impacts. This innovative winglet technology from APB is playing a major role in helping us reduce emissions and is just one of the many steps we are taking on our ambitious sustainability strategy.”
Further transformation continues
As well as Jet2 retrofitting its Boeing 737-800 fleet, the airline is working on the rest of its operation. With a mixture of Boeing 737-300s and several 737-800s that retain the normal winglets (as they are exiting the fleet at some point), Jet2 is continuing its fleet replacement programme, with a firm order for 155 Airbus A321neo aircraft (with the airline currently operating 3 A321 and 24 A321neos). It has also replaced the Boeing 757 from its fleet to support this, too.
In addition, Jet2 has been working on its owned ground service equipment, with more than 50% of Jet2 ground service equipment now fully electric, and all of the ground service equipment at Newcastle Airport is now fully electric.
In an industry where every penny counts, along with an ever closer eye on how it uses resources, reducing fuel costs is always a good idea – especially if the airline is going sweat these assets a little longer in operation.
