For those of you following the saga of my broken MacBook Pro, let me bring you up to speed on the latest developments. It was a bit borked. After a pretty painful wait for a Genius Bar appointment (my local Apple store doesn't do fast - the only things that go fast are appointments for that Genius Bar), 8 days later, my laptop and myself were once again at the Apple … [Read more...]
TravelPlus: The Sony A5000 (Featuring Images from Hong Kong)
So, as some of you have noticed - I've been Vlogging some of my Hong Kong trip, and been playing with a new camera whilst on this trip - a Sony A5000 First up... the Sony A5000 is titchy compared to the hulking Digital SLR's I normally lug around on trips. I brought this with the supplied lens as 1) I didn't have time to go lens hunting for the "perfect" lens and 2) it's … [Read more...]
Travel Plus…. Technology: When paying for a repair is better value than insurance
On Monday this week, I formally joined the iPhone owners club in the proper sens. Yes, I've had an iPhone since the iPhone 3G, but I joined the special membership club - the one where the screen is cracked after meeting good olde 1970's asphalt. Sadly, there was ever going to be one winner in that fight - and it was the asphalt. That's pretty bad. But how bad exactly? Oh. … [Read more...]
Travel Plus…. Technology – Remember to Print Your Photos!
One of the things I don't do enough of as a photographer is actually PRINT my own photos out. Today, we're interested in Flickr, Facebooking, Intragram, Tweeting our pictures... but printing seems be much more down the agenda. Oh heck. 44,520 photos over 824GB. Even I didn't realise how much I shot last year.Even more embarrassing - how many of the those photos escaped … [Read more...]
Travel Plus… Technology/Photography: Canon 100D – Hiking the down the Diamond Head
Time to return to a long-term test - my Canon 100D Digital SLR camera that I tend to throw in the bag when I'm travelling. The 100D in real life. For those of you who are interested in some background on the long-term test, have a look at it in San Francisco and Chicago. My interest in the 100D is simple - is it any good as a travel camera? Most of you know that I rate … [Read more...]
Iberia WiFi connectivity in-plane – even worth considering?
In flight connectivity is all the rage these days, with Gogo offering various all day packages in the USA for $16 upwards, Emirates offering 500mb for a $1, and so on. Yesterday, I was aboard an Iberia flight - and there was WiFi offered aboard the plane. Which is all well and good. The A330 had the "new" Iberia cabin installed - but we're not interested in that in … [Read more...]
Heathrow Airport WiFi increased free allowance to 4 to 8 hours… but is it worth it?
Heathrow Airport has finally got it into its head that actually providing passengers with free WiFi is a good thing. To begin with, they offered 45 minutes - or 1 hour 30 if you were a Heathrow Rewards member. I wandered into LHR this morning at the crack of dawn (well - dawn hasn't broken yet, but that's besides the point), and saw a new sign on my travels: 4 hours … [Read more...]
Need to charge your phone? Look for a SolarBox in London!
When we are all travelling about, I'm sure one of things we look at on our mobile phones is the battery level remaining. Now, I've written about Power Banks, but sometimes - you forget them. In London however, there's a new solution called "Solarbox" Solarbox charging booth - Image, Solarbox via Twitter The idea is a simple one: get an old red phone box, paint it … [Read more...]
Power banks – the traveller must have?
A lot of us are wedded to our phones or other devices that love to consume power. I know I am sadly. Try getting one of these out of my hands (be it the iPhone or the Sony thing I use as a modem) When we use our devices for mapping, networking, catching up with the world , geolocation, train times (or in the case of trains in Paris - actually operating), especially … [Read more...]
