Air Serbia adds Belgrade to New York route

Air Serbia (what was known as JAT until a few years ago) is to make a little splash with a return to New York. Eithad extends its reach in Europe – gains 49% of Air Serbia

Etihad Airways has formally received regulatory approval for taking over 49% of Air Serbia (previously JAT) from the government of Serbia. As a direct result, the US$40 million that was a loan from Etihad to Air Serbia will now be converted into an equity stake, and Air Serbia joins Etihads Equity Alliance. Day Three of the Dubai Air show has been and gone, and more orders trickle in as the week goes on. The widebody order of the day goes to Air Algerie who are to order three Airbus A330-200 as part of the airlines fleet renewal programme. Etihad buys into JAT, rebrands it Air Serbia.

It seems Etihad has pushed a major step into Europe, with the announcement that they are buying a 49% stake in JAT Airways. As part of the sale, JAT Airways will re-brand as Air Serbia. Both the Serbian Etihad will pump in US$40 Million as a loan, converted into equity, and a US$60 million load to help renews the Air Serbia fleet.
