The offer that I wrote about 15th May about BMI offering a 20% Bonus on destination miles purchased is still running.
And it’s running until 30th June.
Now whilst most of the Star Alliance flyers have flown away, there are those of us preparing for the jump to Avios, with the online conversion tool available from 3rd July.
To repeat the idea:
- Buy your BMI Destination miles
- Wait till the 3rd July
- Convert them to Avios
So why is this semi exciting?
Cost per mile, buying via BMI will be cheaper!
- 24,000 miles through BMI costs £255
- 24,000 Avios will set you back £399
- That’s £144 in your wallet before you begin.
Obviously, there are a few caveats – namely you haven’t brought your allocation of BMI miles just yet. You can buy lower quantities of miles and get a bonus pro-rata, however the numbers above include the £15 purchasing fee. Therefore your value per mile is diminished if you buy lower amounts.
For those with the Chase 100,000 Avios bonus who scoff at this promotion, a little note. The best UK Credit Card (at the time of writing) is the British Airways Premier Plus card by American Express – http://www.americanexpress.com/uk/ba-premium-plus-credit-card/ which has a promotional 30,000 miles after a £3000 spend within 3 months (offer expires 1st August).
So whilst not the best bargain – if you don’t qualify for the BA Premier Plus card, or if you have it already – this is a chance to get some miles on the cheap.
BMI have confirmed that BA flight availability is now available via the BMI Diamond Club call centre. Whist I haven’t phoned to have a poke, I haven’t seen the rates yet, so I’m unable to say if this good or poor value.
So if promos like this turn up, take them and use them whilst you can!
Head to https://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/loyalty-programmes/diamond-club/earning-miles/buying-miles/buying-miles.aspx – and remember to log into your Diamond Club Account.
IMPORTANT: I’ve provided a direct link to the BA Premier Plus Credit Card application.
There is no affiliate kickback on this and this link is provided for your information only. I do NOT benefit from the link above.
Please note, the information above does not constitute financial advice and you should always do your own research on top to ensure it’s right for your specific circumstances, and may impact on your credit score. So don’t blame me if you overspend on a card and they come hounding after you. If in doubt – seek appropriate financial advice.
Those who are considering applying should bear in mind you’ll need to be resident in the UK to get one, and probably have reasonable banking references. So don’t moan at me if you’re in the USA wanting to apply for a UK BA Premier Plus Credit Card.

Purchased 4 times with my BD HH account. I will top off my EC account. Yes, indeed it’s a great value.
Enjoy, I will miss BD for all they have done to us.

Does BMI have a new acount ‘rule’ for buying miles like US Air does – which is one can’t buy miles into a new account for the first ~11 days since the account was opened? I’m thinking this might be an opportunity to boost the family account with BA.

I don’t believe so… it might take a couple of days for everything to set itself up though at the BMI end depending if the software is working. Or not.
