Emirates introduce Skywards “Platinum”

11/02/2013 by Kevincm

If you fly Emirates a lot, there here’s some good news for you, as they introduce a new level of qualification to aspire to – Skywards Platinum.

To get Skywards Platinum, you’re going to need to do a lot of flying – 150,000 miles over a 12-13 month period (comparing to 50,000 required for Emirates Gold). If you’ve flown this by April 1st 2013 – you’ll qualify, otherwise its sitting in the seat and earning miles the hard way to get to the desired elite level.

So what do you get for 150,000 miles in the air?

  • Emirates First Class benefits – Check-in, baggage delivery, access to First Class louges in Dubai with a guest
  • 20kg of extra luggage
  • 75% extra bonus Skywards miles miles
  • Complimentary Gold Card for a family member
  • Guaranteed Flex Award in Business or Economy if there is a seat for sale
  • Guaranteed Flex Fare seat in Business or Economy “even on a full flight”

So really… extra points, First Class Ground services and extra miles. If you value seat redemptions, it could be useful.. although if you’re flying 150,000 miles a year on one airline… redeeming miles may not be so important and you’d prefer time on the ground. .

The new level is open for business on 1st April 2013 – the same day that the Emiates/Qantas Codeshare deal begins.

It’s just bonus miles for people who are already extremely loyal to EK (it’s ultra hard for mileage runners to reach this) … can’t imagine this would lead to much incremental loyalty.

It feels a lot like PPS and Hon Circle. Nice for marketing, but light on useful benefits above what a typical J passenger already get day to day.
