FAA issues an airworthiness directive for the 787

26/04/2013 by Kevincm

It seems the groundings of the 787 fleet is beginning to lift after the US Federal Aviation Administration cleared the class for flight with a formal air worthiness directive with the replacement of the battery systems.

Japan’s regulators have followed the FAA, allowing All Nippon Airlines and Japan Airlines to release aircraft to testing after replacement systems are fitted.

All Nippon Airlines will commence test flights on Sunday.

All Nippon Airlines and Japan Airlines make up just under half of the grounded 787 fleet with ANA operating 17 of the type, and JAL operating 7 of the type – a total of 24 aircraft.

Boeing engineers are being dispatched to locations around the globe where 787 Dreamliners are currently grounded to assist in the installation of the new components

Boeing is expected to complete repairs on all 50 of the grounded Dreamliners by the middle of May.

How many of us are going to sit on the sidelines for a while? I know some will just jump to get on the plane, but I’m taking a wait and see and booking my flights on 777s for now. I’m sure we’ll see some good sales on 787 routes though.
