All Nippon Airways (ANA) scored a coup when they became the first operator of the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Whilst they didn’t get the first delivered Boeing 787-9 aircraft (that honour went to Air New Zealand), it seems the experience of operating the 787-8 is paying off as the airline prepares to ready the aircraft into service.

Seating layout is a bit tight, with the 787-9 configured in a Japanese domestic configuration of:
- 18 Premium Seats in 2-2-2
- 377 Economy Class seats in 3-3-3
- Total 395 seats
The Premium Seats will feature a 130 degree recline, mains power and USB power at seat, whilst the economy seats won’t offer a lot – apart from 5cm more leg room using lightweight seats:
The airline have released a seat map for those who want to see how you’ll be crammed in on domestic flights within Japan:

The first flight will be a flight a sightseeing flight for elementary school children from Japan and the United States of America. Actual commercial flights will commence later.
It’s another important step as the launch operator of the 787 for ANA, with the airline betting heavily with Boeing 787 for its fleet renewal. The airline has orders for 36 787-8s (28 already delivered) and 44 787-9s.
All Nippon Airways 787s are a very nice to be – especially in Business class on long haul trips. See my review on ANA’s 787 from Frankfurt to Tokyo Haneda.
