China Airlines showed off its new Premium Economy Seat at Computex that will be featured aboard its fleet of Boeing 787 aircraft.
The airline has chosen to revamp its design, so it not only maintains “The Theme of Oriental Aesthetics” but is also imbued with touches of home through distinctive local scenery and cultural motifs, creating a familiar feel with new surprises. The Premium Economy cabin aboard the China Airlines 787 is inspired by the theme “Starlit Mountain City“, combining the mix of colours, materials, as well as the interplay of light and shadow to present a fusion of both Taiwanese culture and technology.
The China Airlines Boeing 787-9 aircraft features 28 seats in Premium Economy Class in a 2-3-2 seating configuration. It features a “Mountain City Nightscape” seat cover that shifts under ambient lighting.
It features a six-way headrest with integrated surround shielding that provides travellers with privacy and comfort in their personal space. The leather footrest under the seat enhances comfort on long-haul flights.
The tray table retains the persimmon wood grain identification system used across China Airlines fleets, featuring an anti-slip surface coating for both aesthetics and practicality. A mobile/tablet stand is built into the seat, whilst for those who wish to be entertained, the in-flight entertainment system is equipped with a 15.6″ 4K high-definition display. Bluetooth connectivity for smart devices is also supported, allowing the pairing of headphones to the system.
As such, the new seat is based on the Recaro R4 Premium Economy Seat
Adding features for the Premium Economy Product
As well as the new hard product, China Airlines is adding lightweight porcelain utensils, individually packaged napkins, two-toned blankets, slippers, and noise-reducing over-ear headphones, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi connectivity.
China Airlines also partnered with Marc Jacobs, the New York-based fashion house, and FRAMA, the Danish skincare, lifestyle and furniture brand, to launch an all-new travel kit.
Making a seat its own
We’ve seen the Recaro R4 multiple times, with it winning multiple orders from airlines. And it is a solid base for customisation, as other airlines have done.
China Airlines has gone for a high-end finish for its product, with custom fabrics and metallic touches, whilst keeping to its corporate theme, incorporating the Recaro seat, along with a high-end entertainment system (with a screen diagonal to match).
We’ll have to see where China Airlines wishes to deploy its Boeing 787-9 fleet. That’s the one thing they’ve kept close so far.
