British Airways prepares to wave goodbye to the Boeing 737-400s

15/08/2015 by Kevincm

It’s been a long time coming, but it seems that British Airways will be withdrawing its Boeing 737-400 fleet towards the end of September.

A British Airways Boeing 737-500 landing at Manchester Airport in 2007 – Image, Economy Class and Beyond (and yes, I had to dive into the archives to find this image. I’m not sure what’s worse… that I have images from 2007, or that I remembered to the month when I shot this image…)

The British Airways Boeing 737-400 once numbered 18 strong, but has been dwindling as Airbus A320 series aircraft have been replacing them.

These aircraft are currently based at Gatwick Airport, operating to short-haul destinations.

This will come to end in September when the 737s will fly their last passengers whilst the plane has British Airways colours painted on it, when the Turin to London Gatwick flight touches down on the 30th September 2015 according to airlineroute.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a final flight without a DO, so over on the British Airways forum on FlyerTalk, there’s a final flight DO being organised… if you fancy 45 minutes in Turin Airport and time aboard these classic airplanes.

Me? I’m not the worlds biggest fan of the Boeing 737 family if I’m honest. But it is an important switch for British Airways mainline fleet as they continue the transition to an Airbus-only short-haul mainline fleet.

Of course, there will be some 737s flying around in British Airways colours still (and indeed some Boeing 737 MAX 8 series aircraft too) – these will be operated by Comair (South Africa) – a British Airways franchisee who still operate 737-300s and 737-400s in BA paintwork.

    FYI that’s not a 737-400 pictured, that’s a either a -300 or a -500.

I’ve just done a reg-check… and indeed it is a 737-500. I’ll have to see if I have a 737-400. Of course, I could just nab one from the BA press materials…

      Thanks.

CMK1o is right — 737-400s have 2 exit row windows

Yeah. I just did a reg-check. Needed a microscope to pick it out, but its a -500.

      Still, not a fan of 737s 😉

      Cheers
