Well if it’s not SNCF, Govia Southern Railway, its Air Traffic Controllers and Ground handling staff.
This time, two lots of strikes are in progress.
Let’s start off in France where French Air Traffic Control are due to walk out in a National Strike (so please expect other services to walk out too).
Paris Orly Airport – Pretty much a certainty this airport is going to be hit by the French ATC strike.
The strike action will start on 27th April 2016 19:00CET/17:00UTC, and last until 29th April 06:00CET/04:00UTC.
British Airways has posted that flights may be cancelled, and flights may be operated by larger planes. Other airlines are sure to follow once their planes become more
Expect cancellations.
Intresting side-note (hmm. I’d love to do side-notes in this software)… Here’s The Local.Fr’s take on Why are the French Always on Strike?
Meanwhile, in Germany, strikes by ground staff will impact Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne/Bonn, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, and Hannover airports
Frankfurt Airport – due to be hit by strikes on the ground.
The ground handlers strike called by the Verdi union will impact services such as:
- Ground Handling
- Passenger Checks
- Airport Fire Services
Airlines have reacted quickly, with:
- Air Berlin has extensive cancellations with all domestic flights suspended until 12:00CET. Intercontinental services from Munich will be diverted via Nuremberg.
- Ryanair has cancelled flights, and is refusing to accept checked luggage from Cologne/Bonn, British Airways is intending a fly a full programme.
- Lufthansa is expecting cancellations and delays, with 895 flights being chopped from both Frankfurt and Munich. Additionally, all long haul services from Munich have been cancelled.
- KLM is expecting disruption
Sadly, I suspect there will be more strikes sooner than not. Allow extra time for your journey, and plan appropriately.
