If there’s something that does annoy me – there are those who operate drone aircraft dangerously. The majority of operators fly them within the law and regulations.
However, there is a minority who insist on being class one idiots, risking lives as they strike for the perfect air-to air footage.
In Newquay, a Flybe aircraft was flying at about 900ft (275m) and was about 2 miles (3km) from Cornwall Airport Newquay when it happened on Tuesday afternoon according to police.

The operator – described as “reckless” is being sought by the police.
Inspector Dave Meredith for Devon and Cornwall police state:
“At 2.54pm a passenger plane containing 62 people was approaching Newquay Airport to land. The aircraft was travelling at around 900 feet and was approximately 2 miles from the airport, just south of St Columb Major when it reported a near-miss with a drone which flew alongside the aircraft.
Police immediately conducted a search of the area but neither the drone nor its operator could be located. This is an incredibly concerning incident; the close proximity of the drone to the passenger aircraft shows a complete disregard by the operator for public safety and we are appealing to the public for information to help us track down this reckless drone operator.
We view such incidents very seriously and the forces’ specialist drone unit will be leading on the investigating into this incident.”
If you have a drone and fly it in the UK, you are bound to certain rules and laws. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has released The Dronecode for those flying non-commercially who state:
- Make sure you can see your drone at all times and don’t fly higher than 400 feet
- Always keep your drone away from aircraft, helicopters, airports and airfields
- Use your common sense and fly safely; you could be prosecuted if you don’t.
commercial operators are bound by different rules – check the CAA website.
If you intend to fly a drone with a camera on it – have some free advice from me.
DON’T FLY YOUR PRETTY TOY DRONE NEAR AN AIRCRAFT OR AND AIRPORT. YOU ARE PUTTING LIVES AT RISK – WHICH ARE WORTH MORE THAN YOUR TOY.

This is insanity. Drones should never be flown near an airport, firefighting or heavily populated area. Drone owners need to be self vigilante in protecting others when they use their drones. A major accident is going to happen one day.
