Lufthansa is continuing to innovate on the ground, with the announcement that the airline will be participating in the US TSA’s PreCheck programme.

TSA’s PreCheck programme as you’re all aware is the expedited screening programme in the USA for trusted passengers, allowing you to pass through security with shoes, belts and light outerwear left on, as well as leave laptops and compliant liquid bags in carry-on baggage.
PreCheck currently serves 18 airlines according the US TSA, including:
- Aeromexico
- Air Canada
- Alaska Airlines
- Allegiant Air
- American Airlines
- Cape Air
- Delta Air Lines
- Etihad Airways
- Hawaiian Airlines
- JetBlue Airways
- Lufthansa
- OneJet
- Seaborne Airlines
- Southwest Airlines
- Sun Country Airlines
- United Airlines
- Virgin America
- WestJet
Data – TSA
Membership to the PreCheck programme is limited to:
- U.S. citizens, dual citizens, and lawful permanent residents
- U.S. Armed Forces service members
- NEXUS for Canadian Citizens
- Global Entry
So since I’m not a Global Entry member (least of all – I’m not travelling as much to the USA as I used to), I wouldn’t be able to take advantage of it, so I’ll have to go through the cycle of un-bagging, stripping, either going through the millimetre wave scanner or opting out (depending on my time scales) and then putting it back together… whilst wondering why the TSA operative hasn’t given me chocolates for getting to second base with me.
It’s good to see PreCheck expanding further – least of all (and we can all agree on this I suspect), TSA screening points are not the most pleasant places in the world to be kept waiting to be cleared by security.
And anything to speed up the progress of clear TSA checkpoints has to be welcomed though.
