Emirates to operate double A380s daily to Birmingham

23/05/2017 by Kevincm

It seems Emirates is continuing to fiddle with the Birmingham timetable, with plans to change its Birmingham UK operation to double A380 services daily.

Flight pair EK39/40 (currently operated by a Boeing 777-300ER) will be swapped with a 615 seater two class A380.

The timetable for EK39/40 is below:

EK39 DEPART DXB 07:25 ARRIVE BHX 11:25
EK40 DEPART BHX 13:30 ARRIVE DXB 00:35+1

Commences 29th October
Booked Equipment: Airbus A380 (615 passenger version)

Earlier this year, Emirates suspended one of its operations to Birmingham (reducing operations to two times a day). It seems Emirates is boosting capacity by adding larger planes.

The 615 seater A380 is split into two classes two-class:

  • 58 Business Class flat bed seats on the rear of the top deck
  • 557 Economy Class seats on both the main deck and the top deck

The airline is showing the A380’s popularity – with over 300,000 passengers alone using the A380 since March 2016 between Dubai and Birmingham.

By taking Birmingham All-A380, the airline hopes that passengers will connect beyond Dubai to other services that feature Airbus A380 operations.  Meanwhile, passengers coming to Birmingham can connect with FlyBe flights to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey and Newquay.

Interestingly, Emirates point out that one of the key passenger segments on this rout are international students coming to the Birmingham and West Midlands conurbation to study at its schools and universities.

Whilst the loss of a one of the three daily services is not welcome, by converting its operations to All-A380 – Emirates will improve passenger experience (with the wider seat the A380 has), whilst maintaining connectivity, whilst keeping the seat count near where it was before – and that’s no bad thing at all.
