The end of the Travelex Supercard

25/05/2017 by Kevincm

One of the bits of plastic I carry aboard is… well… was… The Travelex Supercard. However, for those who use Supercard, there’s very bad news – with the product to be withdrawn after 24tht July 2017.

The idea behind Supercard was simple – a card that could be used abroad, that charges your credit card, and avoid the annoying transaction fees that you can get on some credit cards, with management with an app for you phone.

Sadly it seems it didn’t make enough money for Travelex, with the company stating:

At Travelex we strive to develop innovative products that provide our customers with great value and exceptional service. Unfortunately, the costs of running Supercard and delivering the standards of service we expect have been much higher than anticipated. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw Supercard from the UK market.

It’s unwelcome news, as I found out when the letter hit the floor in my flat.

I’ve been using Supercard for my US trips (as well as the odd mail-order thing, or sponsoring someone who is doing a Triathlon for the German Multiple Sclerosis Association (Please donate!!!)).

And unlike a lot of people, I’ve had very few issues with Supercard – only a couple of my transactions were declined when I used the product. As for the savings – I found them to be reasonable.

£40 saving is a £40 saving.

Those who hold Travelex Supercards will be able to use them until 00:01 on Monday 24th July 2017. If you want to retrieve your transactions from the App, you have until Tuesday 24th October 2017.

The full FAQs from Travelex are at https://www.travelex.co.uk/services/supercard/faqs for those who hold the card and are pondering what to do next.

I know some people had trouble with Supercard, but for me – it was a passable experience, and has saved me a few pennies when travelling – always a useful thing.

I suppose I’d better hunt for a fee-free credit card again….

Head for Points has a great guide on the alternatives.
