Hong Kong Airlines woes continue, with the airline announcing it is planning to suspend its Hong Kong to San Francisco service

According to the airline, it will suspend the route from 5th October 2019.

The reasons given?

… following a review of its network and a change in business plan for USA market.

Hong Kong Airlines will retain routes from Hong Kong to Los Angeles and Vancouver.

The last Hong Kong Airlines flight from Hong Kong to San Francisco will be HX060 and the last flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong will be HX061 on 4 October 2019.

Options for passenger who hold tickets include:

  • Free change of travel date for flights between Hong Kong and San Francisco before 5 October 2019
  • Full refund of unused sectors to passengers who will travel on or after 5 October 2019 and wish to cancel their trips
  • Free change to any destination operated by Hong Kong Airlines (applicable fare and taxes difference may apply)
  • Free transfer to other partner carriers to be arranged by Hong Kong Airlines (subject to seat availability)

Refocusing on Asia

With the San Francisco route in the bin, the airline is planning to launch additional flights in September Haikou, Hangzhou and Sapporo.

However, the Hong Kong Airlines route won’t be Asia. Thankfully, Cathay Pacific and United Airlines provide non-stop flights from the city with lots of one-stop options available.

But it seems that the tightening of belts as they and try to work out what has been going at HNA Group (the owner).

And with North American services already cut, the airline has to find profitable routes.

Fast.

Whilst HNA Group has a network, it seems fighting two airlines with decent network alignments is a lot tougher than they probably thought….
