For those who are intent on departing the United Kingdom, as of today, you will be required to download and fill in a form, detailing your reasons to leave to the United Kingdom.
The forms are live at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-declaration-form-for-international-travel. You will need to complete this form to declare the reason that you need to travel abroad.
You don’t need to complete the form for travel within the UK, to Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
Once completed, you will need to either print a copy of the form or save it to a mobile phone or accessible device. The form may be inspected before you depart, and you might need to bring additional evidence for your reason for travel.
In terms of offences, entering a port of departure to travel internationally without a completed form is a criminal offence, for which you could be fined. If you try to travel abroad without a legally permitted reason, you may also be fined for breaching the stay at home requirements.
There are jobs that do NOT require this form to be completed. These are listed at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules.
The forms themselves can be downloaded in the following formats:
- Word DOCX format (at https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/967069/declaration-form-for-international-travel.docx)
- PDF format (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/967118/declaration-form-for-international-travel.pdf)
What exemptions do I have for leaving the United Kingdom?
- Medical or compassionate grounds
- Weddings, funerals and related events
- “Other reasonable excuses”
How long is this going to be for?
No date has been announced when this form will be sunsetted, however, there is an interesting note on the Government page regarding it
Even once the stay at home requirement ends on 29 March 2021, it will remain unlawful to leave the UK unless you have a reasonable excuse, permitted by law.
Expect this form to be around for a while.
