Schiphol introduces new security scanners… with no need to remove electronics or liquids!

07/05/2021 by Kevincm

Amsterdam Schiphol airport has taken a major step forward in passenger experience, with the airport introducing new CT scanners at all of its security areas.

This means that you will not have to remove liquids, gels or electronics from your hang baggage. Let us explore.

This is operation at the new security filter on the mezzanine floor of Departures 1 – which means that all departure and transfer filters at Schiphol are now fitted with CT scans.

These replace the X-ray machines at the various security filters, with the first test being carried out back in 2015.

Departures 1 has been renovated and is now fully operational and ready for summer 2021, with 21 security lanes equipped with CT scans.

There are 21 lanes at Departures 1, which can be joined with the 14 existing lanes at Departures 2 – offering 35 security lanes (providing they are all staffed of course).

As such, you do not need to unpack your bag when you are at Security at Schiphol Airport.

Hedzer Komduur, deputy director of Safety, Security and Environment at Royal Schiphol Group said

“This is a world first. Good news for passengers because they are no longer required to take their liquids and electronics out of their bags when going through security. It’s also good for security staff. The CT scan allows them to check baggage on their screen in 3D and even rotate it 360 degrees.”

The rules stay the same however

You’ll still need to follow the normal security requirements however – CT Scanner tunnel, Image  Schiphol Airport.

Whilst you can keep everything in the bag and skip the security dance you are used to at another airport, the standard security recommendations are the same – anything over 100ml needs to go in checked luggage.

Items allowed through the are the usual bottles/containers of up to 100 ml in a resealable and transparent bag in their hand baggage.

Whilst the airport may allow Bottles/containers exceeding 100 ml are if approved by the CT scan and member of security staff, if you are transferring onwards, the existing rules will remain the same.

But from a passenger experience viewpoint, not having to the security dance and fast pack and unpack is a welcome thing.
