REVIEW 2021: My Year in Travel (or still not a lot of it)

31/12/2021 by Kevincm

Welcome to the last part of Review 2021 at Economy Class and Beyond – This time focused on my travels. Or lack of them thereafter.

A year mostly on pause

For me the story of the year seems to be waiting, waiting and further waiting, for nations to open and other things to settle down. Whilst the “settling down” part took a major hit in November and December, things are starting to get to the point where I’m thinking of quite a bit of long haul travel.

For a mixture of reasons, I’ve chosen the work on the mid and front lines, rather than travel this year.

And it didn’t help in mid-September… things went south – fast.

Pro-tip – Don’t have a fall in the middle of a major road in the city centre. Its taken me the best part of 12 weeks to get over… and things are still more than a little painful.

And it throws plans into disarray – like most of the end of year restart plan.

One Trip Abroad… again

I made one trip aboard this year. And again, it was Germany – this time Stuttgart and beyond. This is turning into a thing these days.

What other travels?

I’ve done a bit of domestic travels this year – with a trip to Porthmadog and Portmeirion.

Manchester has been a fun trip for a couple of times. Except for the trains mostly.

Loyalty – What loyalty?

My loyalty strategy has been non existent – with the biggest change being me getting a British Airways Amex Card. It seems at least Amex have made their app and payment systems a lot better than they were in the past.

  • British Airways – 80 Tier Points, 15905 Avios earned, 5000 spent.
  • IHG/Accor/Hyatt – Zero. I’ve switched to Booking.com, Travelodge and Premier Inn this year. And only disappointed a couple of times.

What does 2022 hold?

Whilst Lrrr of Planet Omicron Persi 8 has seemingly tried to conquer the planet, I’m forging ahead with my travel plans for 2022.

And yes that includes two Chicago Trips, maybe a New York Trip and a Hamburg trip at least.

Hopefully more.

For now, I’m closing the book on 2021. May 2022 be better for all of us
