What do I get up to on the off-hours? (or “Let us explore some supermarkets”)
The off-hours of a trade show week are a weird time – you’re either in one place or another and suddenly – you’re on your own if there’d no post-event to go to.
So, what do I do? Well, the first thing I tend to do in the off hours is catch up on any non-trade show news. It’s semi-important to pop out of the trade show bubble for a bit to see what madness there is in the world.
The other thing I do is grab a shower when I get back – because racking up 15 to 20k of steps a day isn’t usual for me in the slightest.
But what then?
Hunger is a major driver. Whilst trade show beverages are always welcome, actual food and drink never hurt.
I’m not the type of person who enjoys dining alone – I’ll be honest. It’s not the judgement of dining alone, it is more the case of food is more of fuel rather than enjoyment function. Hence I head to supermarkets to get food and nibbles.
I tried three supermarkets this trip (as a supermarket is the greatest way to look into a way of life I feel), and also, as I wasn’t paying for breakfast at the hotel, I needed some cheap eats to keep me going.
Edeka in Hamburg Hbf
On a Sunday, when things aren’t open in Germany (due to their trading laws), there are always two places to find shops open – the Train station and the Airport (and a big hint: you can also find an Edeka in the airport too).
However, the location of these means that you are paying premium prices for anything.
There is a lot of grab-and-go in this supermarket.
Along with a salad bar.
And snack balls.
And beer. Because.
Penny on the Reeperbahn
Penny Supermarket is much of a value option. Although this supermarket has gone through one hell of a change since I was here last. Gone are the boring walls and all the neon has arrived. And I mean all the neon.
There is value to be had here in terms of warm food items, snacks as well as cheap gifts for the office. It’s also good to enjoy how a supermarket in an interesting area can be dressed up.
Edeka near Neuer Kamp/Feld Strasse
If you want a big supermarket that reminds you of a proper shopping experience, this is the one I like. Lots of space to roam and plenty of options depending on what you want. And it does have all the Haribo that you’ll ever need (without paying airport prices).
Perfect for gift shopping for those who need to shop and of course, all the Dr Oetker pizzas.
And Haribo.
And other things?
Some random photos. Again, when you go between the train station, hotel, conference halls and airport, you get to see a little on the way.
Harbourside near Landungsbrücken
Spending time at the Haputbahnhof
Or even looking at some random U Bahn architecture.
Next: Back to Hamburg Airport.
