ITA Airways continues to innovate and path its way, with its first Airbus A320neo entering commercial service.
The first A320neo entered service on the 20th of February, operating a flight between Rome Fiumicino and Palermo, as it introduces the type to its operation. It also marks the first time ITA Airways blue livery is on an A320neo.
The Airbus A320neo is dedicated to Francesco Moser, the extraordinary Italian cyclist of the 1970s and 1980s, and features unique design details such as the Zorro mask and sharklets. The aircraft will be fitted with modern seats along with the Airspace by Airbus cabin.
For those thinking green benefits, there are some with the new aircraft delivering 20% less fuel consumption and CO2 compared to the previous generation aircraft.
ITA Airways has been modernising its fleet, with orders and deliveries such as the Airbus A350. The work replacing the aircraft will result in 80% new generation aircraft by 2026, with the consequent downscaling of 1.3 million tons of CO2 emissions.
Deployment
The new A320neo will be serving the ITA AIrways domestic and international network from Rome Fiumicino t Brindisi, Bari, Bologna, Catania, Genoa, Milan Linate, Naples, Palermo, Lamezia Terme, Turin and Venice in Italy, and those of Paris Charles de Gaulle, Madrid and Brussels in Europe.
This will spread over the summer season to cover all ITA Airways’ short– and medium-haul destinations in the 2023 summer season
Bold Aims
ITA Airways have been bold with its renewal plans, as it seeks to build on its legacy and prove to be a profitable business. Renewals themselves are costly (be they outright purchases or leases), however, they come with improved engines and interiors – which add up to lower fuel costs.
With fuel being one of the biggest variable costs that airlines have to face, controlling this cost can be key to an airline’s profitability and future.
For passengers, new interiors and seats are always welcome, with an improved passenger experience. But you can bet that every fitting has been weighed to reduce the weight of this new aircraft as much as possible.
