Lufthansa City (previously known as City Airlines) has made its move and announced its network destinations.
The airline will fly the following German Domestic destinations from Munich:
- Berlin
- Hamburg
- Bremen
- Düsseldorf
- Cologne
- Hanover
Two British and one French destination have been confirmed as part of the Lufthansa City Rollout for international destinations from Munich. These are:
- Birmingham (United Kingdom)
- Bordeaux (France)
- Manchester (United Kingdom).
In the following months, Lufthansa City Airlines will gradually expand its network and offer further European destinations.
The first two of four Airbus A319 aircraft to be deployed this year have already been painted in the new Lufthansa City livery, now with the confirmed branding.
Lufthansa City will be using the A319s as a stopgap, as the airline looks to the future and switch to the Airbus A220-300 (which should meet the seat count of an Airbus A319, depending on the configuration).
The airline is setting out its strengths by strengthening the short-haul network is essential for Lufthansa Group’s market position and the planned growth of Lufthansa’s long-haul routes.
Those passengers who will be flying on board Lufthansa City Airlines can expect the usual Lufthansa product offering and customer experience for short and medium-haul routes (eg, two-class service with Eurobusiness seating at the front, economy seating in the back).
Flights will be available from the end of April via the usual Lufthansa Group sales channels (online, app, travel agents and Global Distribution Services).
We’ll see.
It’s going to be interesting, with City Airways/Lufthansa City recruiting from both Cityline, as well as former Germanwings staff, as it attempts to carve out how it wishes to operate.
Its plans are big – a 40-strong A220 fleet is not to be sniffed at, with a rollout starting in the next two years.
The routes here are very much feeding into the Munich hub at this time, rather than looking to other Lufthansa destinations that might benefit from the brand visibility. With them focusing on feeding the Lufthansa long-haul network, this could be its initial focus, whilst trying to contain costs.
We’ll have to see how successful Lufthansa City will be.
