Scandinavian Airlines is taking its next steps as it prepares to leave Star Alliance and join SkyTeam.

The big dates you need to put in the diary are:

  • Scandinavian Airlines leaves Star Alliance at the end of 31st August 2024
  • Scandinavian Airlines members will gain access to most SkyTeam benefits on the 1st of September 2024

Following this transition starting September 1, 2024, SAS EuroBonus members will enjoy loyalty benefits similar to those offered today with Star Alliance Airlines with most of SkyTeam’s airlines.

SAS is in advanced negotiations with SkyTeam and many of its member carriers to develop and grow extensive commercial relationships, codeshares and the usual things that make airline accountants happy, although there is no formal notice that the airline will formally join the SkyTeam alliance at this moment – although

Through the SkyTeam alliance, Scandinavian Airlines customers will gain access to 19 new airlines and more than 1,060 destinations around the globe.

Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, Paul Verhagen said:

“We are thrilled to progress on our alliance transition journey and pave the way for delightful new destinations and loyalty program benefits across the world. Our focus now is to guide customers and our EuroBonus members on each step during this transition. We look forward to sharing more details as our journey progresses, with the aim to create a smooth transition to an exciting travel future with us,”

Transition details

Scandivanvatin Airlines has published timelines and a guide for its Eurobonus customers, on dates to be aware of. You can find it at https://www.flysas.com/en/eurobonus/skyteam/.

There are still more than a few details to iron out as SAS continues its transition into SkyTeam (including the membership terms), but for those Eurobonus members that are out there, hopefully, things should be settled in time for the big transition on the 1st of September.

Well, we can hope, can’t we?

The SAS chief commercial officer is Dutch, just like its CEO. Both previously worked directly for AF-KL and had stints in Latin America.

Let’s see when the senior SAS management relocate permanently closer to CPH and to their beloved Netherlands. As it is, I expect that the move into SkyTeam will mean a big increase in the expense of my award travels on SAS flights too soon thereafter.
