To say it’s been a long time would be an understatement, but it seems that Lufthansa is ready to roll out the first aircraft with its next-generation Allegris product.
The first Airbus A350 equipped with Allegris will fly from Munich to Vancouver. The second destination is Toronto, which will be served alternately with Vancouver on selected flights in the first few months.
When further A350s are delivered to Lufthansa the Allegris cabin will also be used on flights to Chicago and Montreal in the summer.
This will be the three-class Allegris cabin, featuring the new business-class seats – with first-class seats seemingly not making it at this time.
Allegris Business Class appears to be the product of Stelia Aerospace, with direct seat access.
In Premium Economy, the ZIM Seating ZIMPrivacy seats will feature, as rolled out (akin to the seats that were rolled out on SWISS in spring 2022).
Finally, in Economy Class, the Recaro CL3810 will feature.
Travellers can now also view a seat map for all Allegris flights from 1 May, via the familiar booking channels with all special Allegris seats, such as the five options in Business Class.
A photo gallery with important additional information on the various options gives travellers a detailed picture of the product benefits.
How does this look? I ran a brief check on Lufthansa’s site – and the first sign that a flight is an Allegris flight will be in front of you:
If it’s got that blue highlight, you’re good to go.
In Premium Economy, expect to pay. At least you can see the seat map beforehand.
And the model images.
Moving to Business Class is where it gets a lot more fun. The seat maps as Lufthansa has promised are now live.
Clicking on the links on the side shows you what you get. Here’s a “Privacy seat”
And here’s an extra long bed seat
Notice the words – free of charge. That’s just for now. Seat reservations in Business Class are free of charge in the first few months before Lufthansa starts to charge.
Passengers who are already booked on these flights will be notified of their “upgrade” to the new cabin
Five years late… or just on time?
This is the part where we skip the nice parts. This business class seat was promised in 2019, with the rollout of the Boeing 777X in the Lufthansa fleet.
That as we all know, didn’t happen, with the business class concept being pushed further back each time. It took until 2022 for the airline to start settling on branding and its rollout (as well as its expansion over to SWISS.
And since then, products have evolved from all parties – be it in how seats are designed, their weight and even if they have a door on them – for as we all know, the current hotness in the business class seating market is can you put a door on it for maximum privacy.
Given the partners that Lufthansa is using for this particular Allegris implementation (with all of these suppliers having formidable reputations for seating comfort and design), it will be down to real-world implementation.
As well as the spectre of monetisation – because if there’s one thing that Lufthansa is going to do with Allegris, is push monetisation – hard, given the amount of options in the cabin and across all classes.
