Iberia lauches “Avios only” flights

10/05/2024 by Kevincm

It seems that Iberia has taken a leaf out of the British Airways book and is launching its own “Avios only” flights.

Iberia has launched its “Iberia Plus Flight”. This is an exclusive initiative for Iberia Plus customers, who will be able to book their plane tickets by redeeming Avios. You will not be able to buy revenue tickets on these flights.

For these flights, the airline chose two of its most popular summer destinations: the Greek island of Santorini and the Sicilian city of Catania.

In terms of pricing, Iberia Plus customers will be able to book their tickets for the Catania flight from 2,100 Avios + €73.80 each way and a maximum of 8,250 Avios + €23.80.

For the flight to Santorini, the minimum is 2,750 Avios + €83.80 and the maximum 11,000 Avios + €23.80.

These may be purchased using Avios as single segments – so you’ll need to double the amount for a return trip.

The flights offered through this exclusive Avios system are

  • Madrid-Santorini (7 July)
  • Santorini-Madrid (14 July)
  • Madrid-Catania (27 July)
  • Catania-Madrid (3 August)

With this initiative, the airline seeks to reward the loyalty of Iberia Plus customers by offering them an exclusive trip, with special features throughout the flight.

If you’re in the Avois family, you should be able to transfer Avios to and from Iberia Plus accounts. The Iberia Plus account must be more than 90 days old and have earned at least one Avios.

If you create an account now, you might be a little late (but in time for the next one).

Expect more

It seems that the Iberia team have been going over the work British Airways has done with its Avios-only flights – and has mapped out the first viable routes for it to try.

I’m sure Iberia will need to crunch the number on the Avios to a fiat currency, as well as the amount it takes in on taxes and fees, and then work out how much it costs to put on the flights.

But if it works – and given the success the British Airways Avios-only flight has had, I would argue this would be the outcome – I would expect more Iberia Avios-only flights in the future…
