One of the things we play in booking airplane tickets is booking that perfect seat. Well, Open Access rail operator Lumo is adding seat selection functionality to its services.
Lumo is offering customers the chance to select the best seat in the house thanks to the introduction of its new online seat selection tool, alongside a brighter new look for onboard seating from this month. It will allow you to choose your own seat, be it a window, a table or an aisle seat.
This will be offered free of charge to allow passengers to choose their perfect seat on the train when booking directly through the Lumo website.
Lumos seating offers generous legroom, winged headrest and individual table light.
In addition to its seat selection tool, Lumo seats will also be debuting a brand-new design from this spring, with a comfier and harder-wearing material to further enhance customer comfort while staying true to Lumo’s bold blue look and feel.
Lumo offers 400 seats aboard its five carrage trainsets, with 52 priority seats and 2 wheelchair accessible spaces. Their seat plan can be downloaded as a PDF here.

Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director of Lumo, said:
“It’s very easy to go about our busy days never really looking up and appreciating all of the beauty around us. Our Lumo services travel through some of the most beautiful, scenic routes in the UK including the North East England coastline connecting Scotland with England, so there’s no better way to relax than to sit back and take in the views. With the introduction of our new seat selection tool, we are excited to remind our customers to appreciate the journey itself and to allow them the freedom to personalise their journey onboard our services with our great value fares.”
Growing options
Lumo is now approaching five years in operation and has contributed to an extra 1.4 million journeys each year, with them adding to the travel options. Whilst it has been successeful from attracting people away from car or plane journeys, it also competes with LNER on the East Coast Rail route.
Luno claims that fares average around £55 for the journey between London and Edinburgh.
For passengers, having the option to select their preferred seat when travelling will be a boon, along with more comfortable seat fabric.
