For those who travel with Lumo between London, the North East of England and Edinburgh, there’s good news as the train operator has completed its seating refresh.

The refresh involves 1,930 seats across the five Hitachi-built five-carriage trainsets, with around 400 seats per train (with 52 priority seats and 2 wheelchair accessible spaces).
The upgrade introduces a brighter, more durable seat fabric which retains Lumo’s signature electric blue colour scheme. Customers continue to enjoy generous legroom, winged
headrests, individual table lights and large tray tables.
This refresh has been completed ahead of Lumo’s service expansion, which will take some of the train services to Glasgow Queen Street in December, with advance tickets starting from £33.90 one-way.
Whilst Lumo competes with LNER on the East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland, it also competes with airlines and cars, providing point-to-point connections with a low-carbon, electrically powered train. With the train operator approaching its fifth year of service, the company has added an additional 1.4 million journeys annually, with fares averaging around £55.
Jen Clare, Service Delivery Director at Lumo, said:
Completing this seat upgrade across our fleet is a significant step in enhancing the onboard experience for our customers, aheadof our Glasgow service launching this December. It reflects our ongoing investment in comfort and sustainability and demonstrates our ambition to make rail travel the preferred choice for more people.”
Steps in comfort are always welcome
Comfortable seats, especially on trains, can be a difficult thing to achieve, with everyone’s backs a little different (as well as their posterior), some people loving a firm straight back, whilst some will complain they are ironing boards, whilst there will be some that think the padding is too soft.
Thus, it’s difficult to please all the people, all of the time
With the seating refurbishment, it will certainly brighten up the train, whilst providing a place to enjoy the journey between London, the North East and Scotland. Combine this with the ability to select seats and reasonable fares, Lumo remains a compelling option.
