Lufthansa is retrofitting a number of its existing Airbus A320ceo (current engine option – the original production run of the A320) with new products inside the aircraft.
The modernised cabin will be installed on 38 A320 aircraft, with a planned retrofit rate of one aircraft every 30 days.
The first Airbus A320 with registration “D-AIZY” is now fully modernised and has been back in the air since mid-February. This aircraft has been based in Munich since its return to the fleet, operating European short and mid-haul services.
Lufthansa aims to complete the retrofit by 2029.
Let’s have a look at what has been retrofitted to the cabin.
New headrests and more comfort: The new ergonomically designed seats from Italian manufacturer Geven offer passengers more comfort than the previous seats, with horizontally adjustable headrests. In Business Class, there is a greater recline offered.
More space for carry-on baggage: The new cabin is equipped with overhead bins that are 40 percent larger and offer space for significantly more carry-on suitcases or bags, as baggage can now be stowed vertically. This also makes boarding more efficient, as passengers can stow their luggage more quickly.
For those who have been paying attention, this is the Airbus AirSpace L overhead bin.

USB port and holder for tablet or smartphone: Every seat features its own USB-A and USB-C ports, enabling mobile devices to be charged. In addition, all seats are equipped with a holder for tablets and smartphones.

Jens Ritter, CEO Lufthansa Airlines, said:
“Our ambition is clear: We want to offer our guests a premium experience on short- and medium-haul routes as well. The A320 family is our largest fleet – that’s why we’re investing in the modernization of more than 30 aircraft. We’re presenting our guests with a modern, high-quality cabin whose design is inspired by our new long-haul deliveries. Our guests can look forward to more comfort and significantly more space for their carry-on baggage.”
Worthwhile upgrades for workhorse aircraft.
With the modernisation of the cabin, it’s going to make flying Lufthansa a little more agreeable. Whilst a lot of that work is going on in the long haul segment, the connecting segments offered need to come up to a standard, equal to the Airbus A320neo families enterting service.
This is important on the short-to-medium haul legs, where being able to stow your bag easily or charge your phone is important, as well as the seat you’re sitting in for a few hours when shuttling to Frankfurt or Munich.
With a programme lasting to 2029, it’s going to be some time before the entire fleet is up to date with the new cabin standards, so as usual, watch those seat maps before you travel.
