It seems that Thai Airlines has found a purpose for their new A320’s coming on stream soon – and that’s to create a new airline called “Thai Wings” initially.
Unlike a lot of start-ups in the region, this is a full fat product – it will have the trappings of Business classes, baggage allowances, meals – very much how Silk Air is to Singapore Airlines.
The first four A320’s that Thai will receive will head to Thai Wings, with the aim of expanding to 11 aircraft. However, don’t plan too much yet as the route network
hasn’t been announced yet.
So what’s all the keffuful about? And why? It seems that Thai Airways and Tiger Airways have been blocked by the Thai Government from forming Thai Tiger Airways (which was in development last year). Thai already has a Low Cost presence in the form of Nok Air, but the development of Thai Wings could be used to increase frequency on non-core routes locally – and maybe regionally.
This will be interesting to see how this works out – and it could be cheaper for Thai if Thai Wings staffs are on newer (and cheaper) contracts to forfill the job…..
